Draft Action Plan for the Conservation of Edwards’s Pheasant Lophura edwardsi 2015-2020

Hanoi – In preparation for the long term conservation of Edwards’s Pheasant, Viet Nam Edwards’s Pheasant Working Group (VN EPWG) decided to produce an Action Plan for the Conservation of Edwards’s Pheasant Lophura edwardsi 2015 -2020. The draft action plan was completed in February 2015 thanks to continuous researching and compiling efforts of Viet Nature Conservation Centre, the Coordinator of VN EPWG.

Pioneering in the conservation campaign of EP, this is the first conservation plan for L. edwardsi that receives the contribution and approval of various stakeholders in Vietnam, including national authorities, NGOs, forest law enforcement agencies, and individuals. Besides background information about Edwards’s Pheasant, it also provides a comprehensive overview of conservation activities and proposed a coordinated conservation plan toward this species. As stressed out, the highest priority should be given to securing its remaining suitable habitat and improving the management of Edwards’s Pheasant’s gene pool (in the captive population) to prepare for the worst situation (i.e. when reinforcement or reintroduction is needed), while continued efforts should be made to clarify its status in the wild and basic ecology. Four programmes, namely Site Protection and Management, Conservation Breeding, Research, and Coordination and Resource Mobilization, are included in this first Action Plan, all of which need to be implemented in parallel to contribute to the overall goal of having a sustainable Edwards’s Pheasant population in the wild by 2030.

The drafted Action Plan has been sent out to all members of the VN EPWG for comments, suggestion and innovation. As intended, it will be discussed and finalized in the 1st Biannual Meeting in 2015 of the VN EPW in Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province on 16th April 2015.
